Delaware Auto Insurance
Required Coverage Minimum -15/30/10. According to auto insurance law in Delaware, every motorist who registers and operates a motor vehicle must purchase insurance policies with a minimum liability coverage limit of $15,000 for injury liability for one person in an accident, $30,000 for all injuries in any one accident, and $10,000 for property damage. These limits are low. Therefore, it is considered prudent to obtain higher limits, especially if you own assets should you be sued for liability.
Every vehicle titled and registered in the state of Delaware must have auto insurance. This section provides an overview of the minimum coverage the State requires and optional coverage every insurance company must offer. For tips on what to do when involved in an accident, please visit.
Bodily Injury (BI) pays for injuries you may cause another person when you are at fault in an accident. The minimum coverage is $15,000 for one person injured and $30,000 for all persons injured in any one accident, not to exceed $15,000 for any one person. You may chose to increase the limits of your coverage to $25,000/$50,000; $50,000/$100,000 or $100,000/$300,000.
Property Damage (PD) pays for damages up to $10,000 you may cause another person when you are at fault in an accident. You may chose to increase the limit of your coverage to $25,000 or $50,000.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) pays for injuries suffered by you and your passengers. Like BI, the minimum coverage is $15,000 for one person injured and $30,000 for all persons injured in any one accident, not to exceed $15,000 for any one person. You may chose to increase the limits of your coverage to $25,000/$50,000; $50,000/$100,000 or $100,000/$300,000.
In addition, any policy must offer the following two optional benefits:
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Protection (UM) Coverage protects you should you suffer bodily injury and/or property damage in an accident caused by another driver who is not insured or may have limits lower than your own if you opted for increased limits.
- Collision coverage is optional.
